Phyllosome (larva) of a spiny
lobster, about 10 mm long. It posses very long legs that are
cut out of this photograph.
When I was taking the picture, I thought that the small
projection on the left was its head, followed by wider thorax with legs and
then abdomen (right half of the photograph). I was wrong.
After taking an undergraduate zoology course, I realized that this animal, as
a
larva, has a minimized abdomen that houses its anus. Therefore,
that small blimp on the left is the larva's abdomen. To the right, is a
"two-part" thorax, with legs at the rear (left) part of
it. Thus, I have completely left out its head.
Specimen collected during the 1996/1997 research cruises to the coastal waters of Barbados.
