Thankyou for setting this website up. You've obviously put a lot of work into it. I only started to use the Internet about 3 months ago and it's really opening up a new world to me! I had no idea that there are so many other die-hard Gerald Durrell fan like myself! Just to let you know... I have almost the same story about how I started reading his books when I was 15 years old..., but I already was noticing my environment since I was 5 years old 'cos my father was a naturalist (enthomologist) back when I was in Spa n. Like you ,at a very young age, I read a book written by his wife and that's how I got interested in Gerald Durrell. After that I read every book of his I could lay my hands on. In 1981 I came to Germany and hoped to be able to write to Mr. Durrell and / o visit him and his zoo...alas, this is 1999 and I never made it. Today, at almost 38, I'm reading his books again. I'd love to see photographs of his family, to see what his mother looked like or Margo, or any of the other people in his books. Just finished reading Durrell's book, "My Family and Other Animals" and found it hilarious. I wanted more info about the author and his family. I am still curious as to how Durrell's mother, a widow, could afford to move her family to Corfu. How was th family able to survive? There was no mention of work nor any visible means of support; yet, there was always lots of company, food, and drink. I did enjoy your web page and will visit again.

***Webmaster:  As far as I know, they were relatively well off  in the first place.  Gerald Durrell's father held a good position when they were living in India and when he died, living in Greece was much cheaper than living in England.  In addition, that book sounds as if they had one big party or adventure  for four or five years they lived there, but remember that it's more of a literary work.  Thanks for sharing your view and questions about the book.  Mikhail***

Thanks for putting together the page about Gerald Durrell. I have enjoyed his books for a long time and it was interesting to read a little more about his life. The essay entitled "We Remember Him Well: Himself and Other Animals" based on David Hughes' 976 biography provided an intimate look at his personality. In an epilouge to one of his books, Durrell once wrote about the need to protect the colorful and engaging yet defenselesss animals of the world from other creatures who engage in activities like producing nerve gas. The tone of this sentiment was s dark and foreboding that I had a hard time relating it to the person who wrote such light-hearted books. The biographical essay gave me a picture of Durrell as a man intensely committed to the cause of protecting and preserving animal life despite despa ring that his effort would probably prove futile in the long run. I was not aware that he had passed away in 1995, having missed his obituary in the newspaper. Somehow, it seems fitting that he died with an empty glass of champagne nearby. I hope that his books and his example inspire young readers to carry on hi animal preservation work. As for me, I think it time to invite some my family to dinner. When we've eaten to the point where all the buttons on our shorts are undone to accomadate our stomachs and the conversation starts to lull into drowsiness, I'll pour another round and w 'll raise our glasses to Gerry.

Like you, I greatly admire Gerald Durrell, both for what he stood for and believed in and the kind of man that he was. I had thought of writing to him also and in fact wrote to him about six months back in order to become a member of the Jersey Wildlife T ust. I got a reply from the trust secretary, Simon Hicks. From his letter I learnt that he died in 1995. I was pretty shocked and saddened at this news as I really would have liked to recieve a letter from him. I started reading his books early last year nd have read around seventeen of them. Unfortunately, many of them are out of print. Anyway, I digress. I'm glad that you've made a website about him. I'm rather surprised that there isn't more articles and information about him on the web though. I hope that perhaps you could remedify that in the future.
